Letter to Parents, August 26, 2010

Dear Parents,

We’ve had a great few days together this week, and we’re off to a fantastic start in second grade.   Students are doing a good job of getting to school on time, and they are remembering to use their red folders for homework, notes, and other communication between home and school.

Beginning next week, I will place a calendar page inside the folder for homework signatures.  Students will have reading homework each school night.  I only require parent initials on the homework page for reading.  I’d like for students to read a variety of genres, and most students should spend at least ten minutes reading aloud to someone.

On Monday, I will send home additional assignments.   We’ll add spelling homework for Monday and math on Tuesday and Thursday.  As far as spelling practice is concerned, it depends on the needs of your child.  Some students will need to study spelling each night, and other students won’t need as much time.   We will be using spelling patterns, rules and phonics instead of lists.  I will give you examples of words on Monday for you to use according to how much practice your child requires.  We’ll have spelling tests on Friday.

I would like for students to have snacks for the afternoon they can eat easily without utensils.  We will begin the track this week since the weather has cooled off to below a hundred degrees.  Students should wear “safe” shoes.  Ms. Brauss went over this with them on Monday, and I have also covered this.   Students need to be able to move, run and play without their shoes falling off their feet.  If there is any reason your child can’t wear appropriate shoes for physical activity, please let me know.

Our classrooms and cafeteria tend to be on the cool side.  Students should bring a sweater or light jacket to school if they have been uncomfortable.  Students may have water bottles with pop up tops for water during the day.   Please don’t freeze the water as the condensation gets work wet.

I have begun reading with students to get an idea of reading levels and interests.   We will also continue to learn how to use and manage manipulatives in math in second grade.  Students loved making the glyph necklaces to get to know more about their classmates.

This is a wonderful group of kids, and I can’t tell you how excited I am about working

with them this year.  They always have a lot to teach me.  Thank you so much for coming to meet the teacher Friday.   It helps us get off to a good start, and it helps me organize supplies.  Thank you for all your contributions of time and energy for the school and the children.   I appreciate all you do, and I will try to make this year as easy for you as possible.

                                                                                                   Sincerely,

                                                                                                   Ms. Barnes
